Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

what originally drew me to more realistic racing was Forza motorsport 3. but as for a real sim racing title, it was assetto corsa. i met a few people who were into sim racing so i bought a g920 in october last year and well im hooked!

Geoff Crammond's World Circuit (Grand Prix 1) on my father's work notebook.

My first sim-flavoured title was Loriciels' Porsche Turbo Cup on Atari ST: 4 real french tracks and a full manual gearbox with the second joystick! Clutch on "fire" button, then you had to mimic the movements of the shiftknob: from neutral to first gear you had to move it left then up-left, then up-left to down-left to get 2nd and so on. Suction-cups under the joys had to do their best to keep the "cockpit" in place ;)

Pitstop and Pitstop 2 on the Commodore 64 were the first ones I played but it was Geoff Crammond and the crew with Microprose Grand Prix that really got me hooked. Grand Prix 2 took it up to another level.

Depends on the definition 'sim', however I clearly remember some focal points got me startet - and restarted several times. With some years with complete sim hibernation for me.
1985: as a teen the C64 MC game 'Speed King' with the splendid and by the time most suitable joystick from Arcade. Remember especially keen of the Paul Richard track.

1996: Geoff Crammonds 'Grand Prix 2'. Got blown away by the details, haunting me for an immediate upgrade of my study PC. First time I really mingled thoroughly with car setups to hun the last tenths. Got even more into it with the competitive online series LFRS (Little Formula Racing Series), with thousands of competitors, starting with results uploading, hotlapping lists, race results lists, devided in several levelled leagues of which I participated between '96-'99.
In between driving Indycar 2 with likable league setup as well, and then came Grand Prix Legends.

2002: EA's F1 Challenge 99-02. Now the online mod databases for other cars and tracks than came with the game really grew. And the online Formula-Simracing leagues got me busy once again between 2002-2005.

2006: GTR2's deep tuning possibilities, and easy way setting up different kind of race series, combined with now a real modding community got me hanging on, together with rFactor one year later. The two sims I've never had a consecusive month missing driving different mods, for the last several years concentrating on racing classic mods on classoc tracks, where newer sims still miss out.

2009: SimRaceWay amd iRacing speaking dedicated online sim events and lobbies.

2020: This site and maybe a change of the design to a news feed like got me to check other than the download secition (of which I started visiting more frequent when other sites closed down/stalled), i.e. the 'teaser articles' and the forums. Aand combined with the top tier (not necessarily counted as per views) sim youtubers.
The latter which not only got me restarted on newer sims like AC (though played since '14 not that much with CM stuff), rF2, ACC, R3E, iRacing and got me started on new areas as AMS2, WRC and even PC2, but it also finally got me started on a real simrig, and when acquired asked by my wife why I didn't just do that +20 years ago

My love for racing started with Top Gear on SNES, followed by Nigel Mansell's Championship Racing, and Kyle Petty's NASCAR racing game on SNES. Then came the PS1 and Gran Turismo, followed by GT2, then GT3 blew my mind on the PS2. Enthusia Professional Racing is where I really was shown just how close console racing was to real life (the Miata videos were amazing!)! Its also the first game that I used a wheel, a little cheap something that had the leg hooks to the sides to sit in my lap, running bungie but it was sooo fun!

I saw a demo in the early 2000s of GTR2, when I got my first pc, a low end thing, but I got my feet wet with the real deal PC racing sim! It was a Ferrari 575 GT at Catalunya...lost it!

But what really got me into racing legit wasn't my first sim, but it was seeing my first sports car race in 2003. It was the end of the summer break before going back to college, and a race was on. My mom called into the den to let me know since I was always playing GT3 and Enthusia, and I was thinking, being in the US and all, that it was a NASCAR race, but when I got there, they were running through the back straight of some unknown track racing Porsches, Ferraris, Corvettes, and with these open-topped sports cars called Prototypes, with the likes of Joest Racing and Dyson Racing, turning both left and right!!! Mind blown!! I had found the American Le Mans Series at the then-called Mosport Raceway! That is my start into all of it, especially when I saw them at Laguna Seca for the next round, a track I though was fictional on Gran Turismo!

And let's not forget the greats over at Best Motoring and Best Motoring International! Love it all!

For the Love of the Drive!!

My first game ever was epic Jarrett and Labonte Stock Car Racing, I'll never forget it. I even remember my first lap, I think it was laguna seca with Lexus, and of course I was terrible at first.

But the first sim really was Richard Burns Rally. I didn't even know what simulation was, and I thought the handling was terrible. Only few years later I realised how incredible it was, got a clue about reality and simulation and bought a basic FFB wheel. Played it for at least three years very very much.

Thanks for letting me to remember this.

Grand Prix 3, but I didn't knowingly got into racing sims until I started using TC2000 25 años, which was a mod for F1C featuring argentinean touring cars. It was sold as an standalone mod, but to this day I do not know if they actually got the license to use the F1C engine or not.

Grand Prix 3.
Always struggeling to get on the podium even once and when i finally did it, it was the most joyful feeling ever.

Geoff Crammond's Formula One Grand Prix for me that got me hooked on racing for life, but before that I was playing Indy 500 a lot and love playing another Geoff Crammond title called Stunt Car Racer!

GTR 1, GT Legends and after GTR 2, F1 Challege with Birkuc 1978-2008, and Race 07. The GTL is magic!

For me it was when, I’m embarrassed to even admit this, I was following NA$CAR. I bought NASCAR Racing 2 from Papyrus to use on my then Gateway 2000 PC with a TSW Wheel and Pedal set.

I stopped Sim Racing for almost 20 years and picked up again in early 2020 (the only good thing about this accursed pandemic) with my iBuyPower PC and Thrustmaster TC-PC Racer 488 Edition Wheel and T-LCM Pedals. Things have certainly come quite a long way since those good old Papyrus racing title days.
