Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

For me the turning point was GTR2. Up to then, I was racing casually, but GTR2 made me go really deep into sim racing (made it an obsession?) Funny thing, after taking 5 years off to wait for a worthy replacement, GTR2 is my primary game again.

GTR Evolution (the first bought game). There must have been some before that, I think, GTR Evo's and Race 07's demo for sure, probably GPL and F1 2002 / F1 Challenge as well.
 
So many titles I can mention, some more arcade than sim, but even the arcadey ones taught me things like countersteering and braking in a straight line.

Me and the 2000s have come to mention Gran Turismo 4!

Dear god that couldn't have been a better introduction to racing games. This game is seriously one of the best single player racing careers you can play to this day. Buying a used car from the 80s or 90s and slapping modifications onto it for the sunday cup and making your way up to a full blown championship with GT cars or even an international racing series with le mans prototypes was such a massive feeling of progression and development...
But that's not the only point to this game, as the driving physics were nothing to joke about either. Of course for most of us this was a controller experience, but the handling was (is?) just amazing. So precise, complex and intense as the RPMs jumped around in a bumpy track, the wipers rocked left and right with the speed and the tires screeched throughout the corners, while the sound of the wind and the surface kept you fully aware of what mental level of speed you were going. This could come together for an experience of blasting through the competition and focusing on the driving but also on the edge with the emotions of the driving, the Gs and the speed.

A great balance of arcade's fun and intensity and simulation's complexity and concentration, it's something i hope that the series can capture again as gran turismo 7 comes around the block. Still one of my favorites. Can't recommend enough.
 
Can't help but to feel that most modern titles are nothing but a quick cash grab inching more and more towards the EA's model. No passion or long term investment by the devs.
 
Gran Turismo. To this day I’ll never forget my mate who had played it before me describing that ‘you can feel the weight of the car when you turn!’.

I genuinely couldn’t comprehend what he was talking about…….until I played it myself. That was it for me.
 
Well there were a few games that I played and liked but never was really that good.
It started with a friend who had a Playstation back in 1997, and we played a lot of Psygnosis's F1...he mostly playing the 1995 Williams (because he thought it the best car) and I mostly the Ferrari, well because the car was cool, it was 1997 and Schumi was driving for Ferrari, and well that was enough for an 11 year old.

Then he got Toca, which I couldn't run for years because my PC was crappy, I later did play it, with a keyboard.
However before that I had played GP2, again with a keyboard, it was nice, but I stopped after a while, back to flight sims and in 2005 other games.
I somehow got both DTM Race Driver (you might know it as Toca or V8 Supercars Racedriver) and played that for a bit, originally with a joystick as well as GTR. But that wasn't as fun as combat Flightsimming and other games so I resolved to play that once I got a steering wheel.

Well that took a few years, not until after some friends of mine got into Pcars and I started racing that on a stick (part of the X-52 HOTAS) and rudder pedals. Broke the right toe brake on those (Saitek Pro Flight Pedals*) Raced Pcars alongside that and then got a used G27 in mid-2015 amazingly cheap...and then the stick broke, or rather part of the throttle after 9 years of usage.
So at the time the Saitek drivers where utter Sierra Hotel India Tango Echo! So I could only get another Saitek, knowing that it would cause issues with my Intel Based system, or get a Thrustmaster Warthog, then the top-of-the-line stick for most.
which cost about 270-320 Euros, compared to a Saitek X-55 Rhino's 180-200, or an X52Pro for 120.

So while I was saving up money to replace that stick, I needed something else to do and I started racing in Pcars 2 a lot, and found that I liked it. Then I found a Box of something called ADAC GT Experience 2015 for a tenner in an electronics store and stumbled upon R3E getting some stuff for it. Followed by Asetto Corsa in the Christmas sale of that year, liked the driving, but I found the lack of weather, day/night cycle, no career mode, a bit sad. It was great for hotlapping, but racing overall? Mind you it was not the fine tuned powerhouse it is today, tire models were still not finished.
Then the Simbin Bundle in the same sale, after I found out that I really liked how GTR played with the wheel (as I said I held onto that box! ;) ) and found out that DTM Race Driver had not aged as well.....getting that to work with a modern wheel was a pain.
After that I got rfactor 1, then later on two, pre-ordered Pcars 2 Deluxe and really enjoyed my time in that, which lead to my first forays into League Racing and really making me grow as a driver. Still a good intermediary level sim, or what we called a casual sim back in the days, before casual became a dirty word.
I backed ACC during early acess and was among the first drivers in my league to race to take part in an ACC league.
Also did my first two endurance races in AC, a 6 hour race (ended doing 4 hours, getting classified on my own, because the other driver was a no-show) and a 12 hour race (in an LMP1 with a team of 2 other drivers.)
Sadly had to give up league racing in the last year, due to work related issues. I'm still racing, but I could not afford the ammount of training necessary for the league.
And during the last year I also got AMS 2, hoping for it to be developed like ACC. (Although the latter's FFB still could use some work!)

So yeah, Pcars got me into it, it and it's successor were my bridge into simracing.


*They have an inbuilt weakness/obsolescence in that they have a strong spring that is connected to a plastic mouinting point/hook. That is going to break sometime.
 
Geoff's grand prix one and rally trophy were great at the time. Still rf2 really got me to sim racing and I started to take it more "seriously"
 
Gran Turismo 1 is the first racing game I played and all GT after that until GT6.
But, and it is a big but. NetKar Pro is what ignited the passion for SIM racing and made it the important hobby it is for me today, using my VR rig on a daily basis.
 
Played GT3 to GT6 growing up but never really paid attention to the genre because I was too busy trying to get good at fighting games (still absolutely terrible even to this day for those who are wondering).

I think Dirt Rally was the title that dragged me into the realm of sim racing back in 2017, and then I learned about Richard Burns Rally (which I've never played as a child). Decided to take sim racing more seriously from that point on.
 
I guess technically the first racing games I played were probably in arcades or on my father's Intellivision, but the first racing game I really played on my own terms was David Kaemmer's Indianapolis 500 on DOS.

Which, checking the wiki entry now, is "hailed as the first step of differentiating racing games from the arcade realm and into racing simulation."

So, I guess I started my sim racing journey at the same time the industry did.
